Allegheny Brass Band

Al Duerig | Eb Bass

Al DuerigAl Duerig was one of the organizers of ABB in 1984 and has played in virtually every concert and competition the group has participated in since then. He began playing tuba at the age of 12. He'd vaguely considered the saxophone, but the band director either misunderstood or maybe needed more low brass, so he brought out a sousaphone. He played this in high school band and orchestra, and later in the University of Pennsylvania band, and also later took up the trombone and played in a couple of amateur dance bands. After college, he put the horn away and devoted himself to raising a family (five sons, now all married and on their own). That done, he decided to get back into music, strictly on an amateur basis.

Over the last twenty years, he played in a number of community groups, and remains active in the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic and the Allegheny Brass Band. . He retired from his position as General Engineering Manager with Bell Telephone in 1985, and when not playing the trombone or tuba he enjoys tennis, skiing, sailing, and traveling the world with his wife and sometimes one or more of his sons
