Al Duerig | Tuba

DuerigAl Duerig was one of the organizers of ABB in 1984 and has played in virtually every concert and competition the group has participated in since then. He began playing tuba at the age of 12. He’d vaguely considered the saxophone, but the band director either misunderstood or maybe needed more low brass, so he brought out a sousaphone. He played this in high school band and orchestra, and later in the University of Pennsylvania band, and also later took up the trombone and played in a couple of amateur dance bands. After college, he put the horn away and devoted himself to raising a family (five sons, now all married and on their own). That done, he decided to get back into music, strictly on an amateur basis.Over the last twenty years, he played in a number of community groups, and was active in the Pittsburgh Philharmonic. He retired from his position as General Engineering Manager with Bell Telephone in 1985. When not playing the trombone or tuba he enjoys tennis, skiing, sailing, and traveling the world with his wife and sometimes one or more of his sons.

 Cam Huffmyer

IMG_6943Cameron Huffmyer picked up the tuba in 2006, after starting on the trumpet in fourth grade. Since then, he has learned to play most of the brass instruments, mainly focusing on trombone, euphonium, and tuba. He graduated from North Hills High School in 2013, and attended Slippery Rock University before taking some time off to be with family. Additionally, he has played in many local organizations, such as the River City Youth Brass Band under Drew Fennell, Three Rivers Young People’s Orchestra under James Nova, and his church worship band. He was one of the inaugural recipients of the Allegheny Brass Band scholarship in 2013, and joined the band in 2015. He has studied under Len Lavelle, Phil Van Ouse, and Matthew Murchison. When not playing music, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Hope, and 2 daughters, Cady and Carsyn; he also enjoys playing video games and reading for pleasure.
